Vineyard Report leading up to harvest

We experienced a very good winter in 2013 with sufficiently low temperatures and higher than average rainfall, which guaranteed favourable bud burst and resulted in large catchment and farm dams being full. Soil water content was also at full capacity, which bodes well for the season going forward. Initial growth was slow due to cold conditions and low temperatures in October, which was unusual for that time of the year.

We met with Miguel Chan, Group Sommelier for Tsogo Sun, to find out a bit more about him and his day to day work. Hailing from Mauritius, Miguel has been working in South Africa since 2003 and has built a great reputation as one of South Africa’s top sommeliers in that time. Awarded as South African Young Sommelier of the year in 2007 by the Chaines des Rôtisseurs, Miguel has also judged for numerous publications, competitions and awards shows including Platter, Absa Top 10 Pinotage, Nederburg Auction, Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show and South African Airways On Board.

Multiple award wins with Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2013

Wildekrans Wine Estate has been awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for a number of their wines in in the 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards. The wines, which fell under the Walker Bay region wowed judges across both their red and white offerings.
